Trust, more than money, makes the world go around

In a recent interview, I was asked about my experience working for Secretary Powell in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. Leading the international women’s portfolio in the Bush Administration provided me with a unique perspective on trust and leadership at the beginning of the millennium. The importance of trusted leaders has not changed since then, but the kind of leaders the public trusts has changed, possibly as a result of the handling of the pandemic.

 

The 2021 Edelman Trust Barometer showed an increase in trust across all Australian institutions, especially government, business and NGOs. Increased trust in business spanned almost all sectors; the highest increases were shown in healthcare, energy, telecommunications and financial services. The only sector where trust fell was technology.
