Ambassador Kennedy Announces First Alliance Award

The true strength of the US-Australia Alliance is its people.

AmCham inaugurated the Alliance Awards three years ago. We learned a lot from COVID as individuals, businesses, and nations. Emerging from the pandemic, the importance of innovation shone in a new light. The pathfinders, the people who look at things differently and take action, were more important than ever before.

In a special reception at the US Embassy in Canberra, AmCham Patron and US Ambassador Caroline Kennedy announced the winner of the first 2023 Alliance Award - The Ambassador's Award.

The Ambassador's Award complements the six industry awards to be announced at the AmCham Alliance Awards Gala on October 25: artificial intelligence, biotechnology, energy and clean technology, the digital economy, quantum, and space. These sectors are at the frontier of innovation and actively changing the way we live and work.

So, why is there a seventh Alliance Award?

We realised there was a missing piece. How are we bringing people together on the journey? How can we ensure we are promoting our shared values, cultural bonds, and inclusion as these emerging technologies propel us into the next generation of the Alliance?

Thanks to the support of the Pratt Foundation, AmCham is able to recognise these Australians making a positive contribution to their communities through the Ambassador's Award.

Ambassador Kennedy announced that Dr Diana Zhang is the Winner of the 2023 Ambassador's Award. A Board Director of Science and Technology Australia, STEM Ambassador, and professional musician, Dr Zhang advocates for the inclusion of girls and members of culturally and linguistically diverse communities in science.

She works at the intersection of medical research, AI and machine learning – another sector in which Australians and Americans are collaborating to the benefit of both people’s health and the economy.

Dr Zhang is on an entrepreneurial journey to translate her Fulbright Australia research, detecting Parkinson's Disease up to 15 years before clinical diagnosis with 96 percent accuracy.

AmCham congratulates Dr Zhang and all of the extraordinary Finalists. For more information on all of the incredible AmCham Alliance Awards Finalists, , and make sure you are with us for the Gala as we announce the winners of our Alliance Award industry categories.

E

STATEMENT ON ISRAEL

The American Chamber of Commerce in Australia echoes the comments of Prime Minister Albanese regarding the appalling and abhorrent attacks on Israel.

AmCham has a close and productive working relationship with the Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce, including a joint trade mission to Israel in November 2022. This trade mission included a solemn and profound visit to Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center in Jerusalem. That more Jews were killed on October 7 than on any day since the Holocaust is an unmitigated tragedy.

Israel is a vibrant and innovative democracy. We reaffirm our support for the people of Israel to live freely. As Minister for Foreign Affairs Senator the Hon Penny Wong said, "Australia stands against terrorism. We stand in solidarity with Israel."

MASON COX ACHIEVES PREMIERSHIP SUCCESS

Chants of "USA! USA!" rang around the 100,024 sell-out crowd at the iconic MCG for the 2023 AFL Grand Final as American-Australian Mason Cox received his Premiership Medal.

Originally from Texas, Mason first learned of Australian rules football in 2014. Fast-forward to 2023, Mason is now a dual citizen of Australia and the United States. He has played over 100 games and kicked over 100 goals.

But his story is not without setbacks. He has endured more than his fair share of the slings and arrows of an elite athlete's career, including detached and torn retinas, a ruptured spleen, and the criticism that comes with a big American challenging Aussies at their own game.

Now, the 211cm ruck/forward has realised every footballer's dream and achieved the ultimate success. AmCham congratulates Mason and the Collingwood Football Club on their superb victory.

Mason Cox will be one of of the inspirational leaders speaking to the AmCham Global Leadership Academy in 2024. The Academy brings leaders from sports, philanthropy, defence, industry, and government to share their experiences with the next generation of leaders. Enrolment in 2024 is now open. Contact your AmCham General Manager for more information.
