November 2019
Message from AmCham CEO April Palmerlee

Success means different things to different people. At AmCham Australia, we are all about business success, but even so, that still can mean vastly different things depending upon who you ask. We recently held our first Health and Wellness Conference, bringing together executives from across Melbourne to focus on mental health in the workplace. Many of our members tell us that they put their employees first: workers being the most important ingredient to company success. And having healthy employees, both mentally and physically, is something that our members take seriously. At the conference, speakers and participants discussed how to build a mentally healthy culture, through thorough preparation, effective launch, and sustained momentum. Keynote speaker Beyond Blue CEO Georgie Harman shared some of the myths and facts around mental health in the workplace including the importance of reducing the stigma about mental health and inclusiveness. She pointed out that when organisations and leaders take the steps to address these areas it is not only good for people but also good for business.

Another way to look at business success is whether corporations are fulfilling their purpose. For a long time, companies endorsed the principal of shareholder primacy: returning profits to the company’s owners. But recently, 181 American CEOs signed the Business Roundtable’s new Statement of Purpose, committing to lead their corporations for the benefit of all stakeholders: customers, employees, suppliers, communities, and shareholders. AmCham Australia dived into this topic at our first major event focusing on Corporate Social Responsibility. In Brisbane, members and their guests gathered to share ideas about how we can all invest in the communities where we live and work – and how such actions reflect the business community’s commitment to push for an economy that serves all Australians. Keynote speaker Professor Cle-Anne Gabriel of the Gala’s sponsor, University of Queensland, delivered passionate and inspiring remarks around CSR, including sustainability.

Yet another perspective is through a Diversity and Inclusion lens. AmCham members are actively thinking about how by empowering their employees to bring their whole selves to work every day they can free up discretionary energy for collaboration, creation, and engagement. Once again sponsored by Coca-Cola South Pacific, AmCham’s second D&I conference drew together hundreds of leaders from large and small organisations to develop strategies to support success personally and professionally. At the conference, many AmCham CEOs signed a pledge to commit themselves to goals that advance a diverse and inclusive workplace. National D&I Committee Chair Div Pillay provided authentic and informed leadership, inspiring all who participated.

AmCham Industry Series: From Paddock to Plate

Panel of Speakers:

  • David McKay, Chief Operating Officer, Thomas Foods
  • Justin Webb, Co-Founder and Executive Chairmam, AgriWebb
  • Dr Paula Zitto, Food Geographical Indications Consultant, The University of Adelaide

The cornerstone of Australian industry is agriculture and quality food an iconic part of our identity. It is a key contributor to our country’s GDP and Australia’s economic prosperity, with around two thirds of total production being exported.

Australia has benefited from the globalisation of food supply chains, the liberalisation of markets and access to consumers who are hungry for high-quality food products. But our reputation as a clean, sustainable and safe food producer sits outside our control. To ensure that our ‘made in Australia’ brand is not tarnished, we will need to take steps to fortify the integrity of our food industries with government, regulators, retailers, and producers all having a role to play.

Innovation including new technologies, smarter farm management, changing consumption patterns, food security and improved business models are creating new opportunities, as well as regulatory and intellectual property hurdles not seen before.

Energy and Infrastructure in 2035: What Will It Look Like?

Keynote Speaker:

Azad Hessamodini, President-Strategy and Development, Wood

We are living in a rapidly changing world and now more than ever we need a vision for the future which is ambitious about our potential, realistic about the pace of change, and navigates new challenges and shifting objectives.

Scenario planning is an important tool used at wood to explore and understand the possibilities of the global energy transition and rising demand for sustainable infrastructure over the next 15 years. The insights and considerations into the geopolitical, social and economic drivers that will affect the rate of innovation and adoption of renewable and low carbon energy alternative are imperative to successfully identifying opportunities while considering the risks.

Join amcham as azad hessamodini, president-strategy and growth will share with you wood's outlook on these industrial markets and what the world could look like in 2035.

To what extent could energy source provision, distribution and demand change… can the worst effects of climate change be avoided? What are the pressures on aging infrastructure in an increasingly urbanised world? Is a complete transformation of the global energy system not only possible but achievable? Or will a politically and economically fragmented society stagnate the energy transition?

1. Childhood dream job?

For the longest time I wanted to be an actress, I’m still waiting for my big break!

2. Driving force in your life?

It goes without saying that my family are a key driving force for me, I am continually blown away by how my kids are approaching the world, with wonder and determination in equal measure, and as they grow into young adults they’re taking on their own challenges superbly. From a work point of view I am very driven by finding solutions, I am passionate that win-win is possible in almost all cases when we’re working on a project or anything transformative. I am a real optimist.

3. Most rewarding part about your job?

Being part of the team that creates places that people enjoy and want to come back to time and again is incredibly rewarding. When you’re walking through a development or building we have delivered it’s the little things that strike me as so powerful, families relaxing or work going on around you – gives me goose-bumps! And being a part of the team at Lendlease is really special to me, those talented people continually blow me away with their creativity and determination to take on complexity at every turn.

4. The biggest risk you took?

I moved half way around the world to follow my love in my mid-20’s, we didn’t really have a plan, just turned up with 2 backpacks and a bit of beer money. We sat on the floor of our apartment for weeks because we couldn’t afford furniture! But I think taking chances is usually worth it, and we now have furniture, so I guess in that case it was.

5. Dream dinner companions?

The cast of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

6. Best advice you ever received?

I had a wonderful friend called Karen who was a guide and light for me for some years, and through some very challenging times she would always bring me back to being true to myself with humility and positivity. Karen isn’t with us anymore, but it’s her voice that always shines through when I am up against it, I was really lucky to have her in my life.

7. First line of your obituary?

Natalie was widely acknowledged as the best actress in the world, after she was found at a late age to have immense undiscovered talent.

Education: Power to the People

As a former U.K. education minister once said, the reason education is such a difficult topic to debate and therefore set policy on, is because it is one of those subjects where everyone has an opinion.

As opposed to say energy or trade policy, education is a subject where all of us have real personal experience which makes those opinions all the more robust and heartfelt. Almost universally, either we, or our children, have been exposed to some form of primary, secondary, or tertiary education and therefore have a view on how effective that education has been, what it is worth, and how it could have been done better or more cost effectively.

Or if we haven’t benefited from education — something that is sadly much more common than one might think, especially in the developing world — we are much more likely to be acutely aware of what that lack of education will have cost us in terms of health, wealth, and happiness.

In our last Citi GPS report Education: Back to the Basics, we reviewed a lot of the academic work already published on education worldwide and although we identified a number of challenges, we confidently concluded the net impact of education on individuals, societies, and economies was firmly positive.

But this work was academic in nature. It looked at data and this data drove firm empirical conclusions, but it perhaps ignored the human element integral to a topic as important as education. With this in mind, the first aim of our follow up report was to validate our theoretical work by conducting a five country, 2,500 person study looking at attitudes toward education across the globe.

This survey reinforces some of the headline conclusions of our first report around the value of education but also uncovers some pretty significant asymmetries in the results; divergences in views that divide geographies, genders, and generations.

To be clear, not all of these are negative but the fact that these asymmetries are there at all underlines one of the key takeaways from our first Citi GPS report, which was that the different stakeholders — policy makers, companies, investors — cannot afford to take a monolithic approach to this $5 trillion+ global market. Nor, in reality, is there a huge amount of time if we want to address the challenges that face us in terms of automation and disruption and the impact it could have on workforces around the world.

Of these stakeholders, perhaps the most fleet of foot are private companies and the investors who support them. This speaks to the second key focus of our new report, which is on the opportunities for private capital. On the back of our survey work and guided by expert interviews, we identify pinch points where we think private capital can play a significant role in making education work better for everyone.
