MESSAGE FROM AmCham CEO April Palmerlee

Ten years after the Great Recession, the American economy is once again strong: The stock market is booming, with the Dow gaining 5,000 points in 2017, and already punching through 25,000 at the start of the year. Corporate taxes were slashed from 35 to 21 per cent, the biggest company tax cut in US history. Unemployment is at its lowest this century. There are signs of wage growth. Inflation and interest rates remain low by historical standards. Regulatory actions fell to a 17-year low. And the country has achieved consecutive quarters of 3%+ growth, which is expected to continue. It’s no wonder business optimism is strong and rising.

In Australia, too, the economy is looking the best it has since the global financial crisis. The S&P/ASX200 hit a ten-year high, smashing through 6000 points, as corporate profits rose for the first time in three years. Politicians are talking about possible personal income tax cuts. Business investment is showing green shoots. The labour market is strong, and optimists outnumber pessimists. Unemployment is the lowest it has been in five years. We are seeing the next chapter in the Australian economy, as Reserve Bank Governor Phil Lowe explained to AmCham members recently.

But there is still much to do. Australia will have to consider seriously its response to the US corporate tax cuts and address the energy crisis if it wants to attract investment and ensure the manufacturing sector remains competitive. AmCham will be engaged on both topics in 2018. We will also be prioritising our members' work in building the workforce of the future, leading infrastructure advances, and harnessing innovation.
