The CEO Message | April 2022

In my last CEO Message, I wrote that the world was undergoing the most significant geostrategic shift in our lifetimes. Since that time, Australia and the United States have moved like the F1s in Melbourne to respond through the Unbreakable Alliance.

Over the last month alone, the momentum is palpable. Ambassador Caroline Kennedy appeared before the US Senate for her nomination hearing to become the next US Ambassador to Australia. The US Congress established an AUKUS Working Group – or the much catchier ‘AUKUS Caucus.’ And Australia has signed a new agreement with the United States to boost the supply of critical minerals.

International travel is back - and powerbrokers of the US Congress are racing Down Under. AmCham Members have been in poll position, meeting with two Congressional delegations led by Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee Congressman Adam Smith (D-WA), and another co-led by Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ).

We also welcomed US Consul General Christine Elder to her new posting in Sydney, and welcomed back former Australian Ambassador to the United States, the Hon Joe Hockey.

The strategic significance of AUKUS is at the forefront of all these discussions. Recently, the leaders of Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom reaffirmed their commitment to AUKUS – deepening collaboration on hypersonics and counter-hypersonics, electronic warfare, cyber capabilities, AI, quantum, undersea capabilities, and of course, naval propulsion technology.

As Congressman Mike Gallagher (R-WI), a member of the newly established AUKUS Caucus said this month, “AUKUS must not be limited to one domain.”

AmCham has launched a unique nation-wide Trade Mission – – to connect your business with defence, government, and industry and maximise the economic potential from the unprecedented technology transfer.

AmCham in Action

Australia is the talk of the town in Washington, and every day brings a new headline with the US-Australia Alliance front-and-centre.

That’s why we’re launching the inaugural AmCham Alliance Summit.

There’s never been a more important time to engage in a high-level dialogue between the US and Australia. AmCham will convene world leading policy-makers, change-makers, and deal-makers for a three-day summit in the city that symbolises democracy.

We seek a diverse cohort of Australian business and industry leaders to join us for this historic Summit.

Tell us if you would like to be considered for the delegation to Washington, D.C. June 21-23.
