ABOUT THE EVENT
A record-breaking grain harvest and strong commodity prices have contributed to South Australia’s agriculture sector growing to $18.5bn. The latest Primary Industries Scorecard 2022-23 found the sector has grown by 7 per cent to its highest level and accounts for 51 per cent of the state’s exports. Grain farmers were the main contributors to the 2022-23 increase, after they last year reaped the most valuable crop on record worth $7.76bn – up 42 per cent. Other sectors to experience growth were forestry, worth $1.46bn and up 5 per cent, and the seafood sector, worth $508m, also up by 5 per cent. Technology has a critical role in improving our productivity to enable to sector to continue that growth trajectory for the benefit of the state and the nation.

Mark Allison - Managing Director & CEO, Elders
Mr Allison joined Elders Limited as a Non-Executive Director in November 2009, served as Chairman and Executive Chairman, before being appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer in May 2014. Mark’s 43-year agribusiness career spans technical, manufacturing, supply and distribution roles and businesses. Previous roles include Managing Director/CEO of GrainGrowers Limited, Jeminex Limited, Farmoz Pty Ltd, Wesfarmers Landmark Limited, Wesfarmers CSBP Limited, CropCare Australasia Pty Ltd and General Manager of Incitec Fertilisers. Mark is currently Chair of the Agriculture and Natural Resources End-User Advisory Board of the SmartSat CRC, the Agrifood and Wine Advisory Board of the University of Adelaide, and a member of the Rabobank Food and Agriculture Advisory Board. He is the previous Chair of Agribusiness Australia, AuctionsPlus, CropLife, Agsafe, the APVMA, as well as a number of other agricultural and industrial and safety businesses. Mark oversaw the development and implementation of the four Elders’ Eight Point Plans from 2014. This strategic plan returned the company to a pure play agribusiness and resulted in the first shareholder distribution in nearly a decade in 2017. Since 2014 Elders has grown from a market capitalisation of $50 million to a peak of $2.2 billion. On 19 September 2023 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Adelaide for his experience and lifelong contribution to agriculture and agribusiness. Mark is from far north Queensland, and is a passionate advocate of agriculture, and regional and rural Australia.
Hon Clare Scriven MLC - Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development and Minister for Forest Industries, South Australian Government
Clare Scriven was raised in Mount Gambier and returned to the region after living and working in Adelaide for many years. Clare was previously State Manager of the Australian Forest Products Association and is passionate about the importance of the industry to the South Australian economy. Clare is committed to regional development, social & economic inclusion, improving educational opportunities and supporting small business. As well as private sector roles in forestry and human resources, Clare has many years’ experience in government policy and service delivery. Clare also understands first-hand the rewards and challenges of self-employment. Clare’s post-graduate studies in management and business have complemented her diverse working background. Clare and her husband, Gerard, are devoted to their family and have six children. Clare is inspired by her passion for the community to represent the state in the Legislative Council, with a special focus on the Limestone Coast.
Dr Penny Schulz - Livestock Producer & Farmer Adoption Specialist, Schulz Livestock
Penny runs a family sheep and cattle operation at Field in South Australia’s Limestone Coast region, with her husband Jason and their young family. She works off-farm as a Livestock Technical Specialist with the SA Drought Hub at the University of Adelaide, with her role focused on farmer adoption – an area of great passion for Penny. Prior to this role, Penny ran her own consultancy business delivering projects to the livestock industry and part-time lecturing with her expertise in the fields of agtech adoption, livestock genetics, farm business management and sustainable farming systems. She also holds several board and advisory group roles including Chair of the Limestone Coast Landscape Board, a member of the Premier’s Climate Change Council and a member of the Minister for Primary Industries & Regions Agtech Advisory Group. Penny is passionate about having a positive influence on the next generation of agricultural professionals. This has included being actively engaged with PIRSA’s Stepping into Leadership Program for rural and regional women where she is a regular mentor, and also mentors students studying tertiary agricultural courses as they near graduation.
Anna Falkiner - CEO and CoFounder, Cropify
Anna Falkiner is the CEO and Cofounder of Agtech start-up Cropify and Director of Aus. Agribusiness. Cropify is harnessing the power of artificial intelligence and machine learning to eliminate subjective grading from the grain supply chain. She is an accomplished professional with a diverse background in business strategy and marketing across wine, sports entertainment and the grains industry. Anna comes from a rich farming heritage and is passionate about driving positive change in the sector.
Brad Perry - CEO, Grain Producers SA
Brad Perry is the Chief Executive Officer of Grain Producers SA, the peak South Australian grain industry body representing 4,500 growers, having commenced in the role in January 2022. Brad has significant experience working within Government, agriculture, advocacy, politics and journalism. Brad worked previously as the Senior Adviser for Agriculture, Food and AgTech for South Australia’s past two Ministers for Primary Industries and Regional Development, as well as a newspaper editor and journalist in regional South Australia. During his time working for the Ministers for Primary Industries, Brad drove AgTech policy, including establishing South Australia's first AgTech Strategic Plan and creation of AgTech demonstration farms inspired by a trip with a trade delegation to Israel. He also spent years working for the Shadow Minister for Trade and Investment, developing trade policies, such as the re-establishment of South Australian trade offices across the world and has also sat on the Steering Committee of Asia Pacific's premier AgTech Food Event, evokeAg. Brad has been very close to industry policy and decision-making over several years, and possesses a deep understanding of the key issues, from grassroots through to broader-scale agribusiness and sector-wide issues.
Rhys Moult - Owner, RMTS
Project Manager - Greenhouse Gemini project. Rhys is an experienced consultant and entrepreneur with expertise in SAAS sales management, business development, and project management. As the owner of RMTA Pty Ltd, an Adelaide-based consultancy, he provides a wide array of services to SMEs, startups, and scaleups, including outsourced business development, digital transformation, strategic technology procurement advice, and smart cities consulting. Rhys has a robust background in local government economic development, having served as Economic Development Manager for the City of Whyalla and Innovation Project Manager at the City of Adelaide, where he led numerous smart city and innovation projects. Notably, in Agtech, as the Project Manager for the GreenhouseGemini project, Rhys was instrumental in integrating advanced AI and semi-autonomous digital twin technology into organic greenhouse farming. His leadership ensured the project stayed on schedule and within budget, achieving significant milestones and establishing key industry partnerships.
Nicole Russo - VP Commercial, Myriota
Nicole has 20 years experience in commercial and technical product development and management across defence, mobile, e-commerce, and IoT, she meld technical expertise with empathy and a passion for excellence, to deliver high value, customer-focused solutions. A strategic and cross functional leader, Nicole leveraged her deep product knowledge and strong customer relationships to ensure long term competitive and strategic success.
Everard Edwards - Team Leader, CSIRO
Everard received a B.Sc. (Hons.) in plant sciences from The University of Sheffield in 1992, and a Ph.D. in the post-harvest physiology of potatoes from Nottingham Trent University in 1997. He undertook Postdoctoral positions at the University of York in the UK and at the Australian National University in Australia, examining climate change effects on plants and plant ecology. Since 2006 he has been with CSIRO, applying his background in whole plant physiology to optimising crop management in perennial horticulture, with a particular focus on winegrapes. More recently, he has led projects to develop digital solutions for this. His work has always been collaborative, engaging with a number of Australian universities and state departments as well as industry.
