James Carouso, Former Charge d'Affaires, US Embassy Canberra
Jim is a Senior Advisor with the Asia-focused strategic advisory firm or BowerGroupAsia. Prior to joining BGA, he was the senior foreign policy advisor to the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command in Hawaii. Earlier, Jim served as deputy chief of mission and chargé d’ affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Canberra, Australia. He also worked as the chargé d’affaires at the U.S. Mission to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Jakarta, Indonesia, in mid-2019. Following a 14-year career in international banking and finance, Jim joined the U.S. Department of State in 1995. Since then he has served in a variety of economic and commercial roles in the Dominican Republic, South Africa, Australia, Thailand and Cyprus, including acting as a member of the U.S. teams negotiating free trade agreements with Australia and Thailand. Jim also served as the counselor for economic affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta and as director of the State Department office responsible for relations with the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore and East Timor. In 2019, he received the State Department’s distinguished honor award. Jim holds a degree in economics from Hamilton College and a master’s degree in international finance from the American Graduate School of International Management in Glendale, Arizona.

Zoe Daniel has spent almost 3 decades on the front line of news and current events, in Australia and internationally, living and working in some of the most challenging environments in the world. She translated the election of Donald Trump for Australians and has brought insights from Southeast Asia, Africa and the Americas home, illuminating key global events.
Zoe is a 3-time foreign correspondent and former ABC News United States Bureau chief. She was based in Washington DC from late 2015 until the end of 2019 and was one of the few journalists who saw the rise of Donald Trump coming. While in the United States, she travelled to 44 states and territories from Alaska to Puerto Rico.
Zoe was the ABC’s South East Asia correspondent from 2009 to 2013 and provided on-the-ground coverage of stories ranging from major political events to natural disasters including civil unrest and political protests in Bangkok, the reform process in Myanmar and the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.
She is the author of Storyteller, which provides a personal insight into her life as a foreign correspondent while juggling a family, and Angel, a novel for young teens about Typhoon Haiyan in the. Philippines.
Zoe’s new book, Greetings from Trumpland, with colleague Roscoe Whalan was released in March 2021.
(Senator) Stephen Loosley AM, Former ALP National President and Senator
(Senator) Stephen Loosley served in the Australian Parliament during the Hawke and Keating Governments (1990-1995), where he chaired both the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade and the Senate Regulations Committee.
Prior to his Senate service, Stephen was the General Secretary of the NSW Branch of the Australian Labor Party (1983–90). He also served a term as ALP National President (1991–92).
Stephen Loosley is now the Deputy Chair of Thales (Australia). He has served as Chair of the Woomera Prohibited Area Advisory Board and is a Director of O’Connell Street Associates. Stephen is the immediate past chair of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, where he is now a Senior Fellow. Also, in 2017, Stephen accepted an invitation to join The United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney as a Visiting Fellow.
In addition, Stephen serves as a Corporate Councillor of the Asia Society (Australia) and on the Board of the European Australian Business Council (EABC). He has also served on the Board of CoverMore Travel Insurance (2013-2016), the Advisory Boards of Veolia (Australia/NZ) and Crescent Capital and on the Board of the Australian-American Leadership Dialogue, along with the Ethics Centre.
Stephen holds First Class Honours degrees in Politics (UNSW, 1976) and Law (UTS, 1997). His first book, Machine Rules, was published by Melbourne University Press in August 2015. He was recently appointed as a Fellow of the Royal Society of NSW.
Stephen is a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (London) and a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (Sydney). He is a commentator on US politics and writes for The Australian, The Australian Financial Review and The Spectator (Australia) and is the Book and Film Editor for The Strategist, Canberra.
On Australia Day 2015, Stephen was awarded an AM for services to the Parliament and to public policy.
