Overview
Clare O’Neil is actively driving important reforms in Australia’s approach to migration and cyber security.

In response to skills shortages Minister O'Neil is looking to radically simplify Australia's migration system with a new migration strategy that will reduce delays, address the intersection with international student visas and target skilled workers who can make the greatest contributions to Australian business.

Following the major cyberattacks on corporate Australia over the past 12 months the Minister has commissioned a new Cyber Security Strategy that aims to make Australia the world’s most cyber-secure country by 2030.

Join AmCham and Minister Clare O'Neil as we explore the impacts and opportunities for Australian business.

Speaker

Hon Clare O'Neil MP
Minister for Home Affairs; Minister for Cyber Security
Parliament of Australia

Clare was born in Melbourne, the daughter of Australian publishers Anne O'Donovan and Lloyd O'Neil. She studied at Monash University, completing a Bachelor of Arts (History), and then a Bachelor of Laws, graduating with honours in both fields. In 2006, Clare was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to undertake a Master of Public Policy at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. Clare has been politically active from the beginning, joining the Labor Party at 16 years old.
In March 2003, Clare was elected as a councillor in the City of Dandenong and after just a year in the position, was elected mayor. Becoming the youngest female mayor of a local government area in Australian history.

In 2007, while studying in the United States, Clare worked as an intern on the New York Stock Exchange; and in 2008 returned to Australia to serve briefly as an adviser to the then treasurer Wayne Swan.  She later worked at management consulting firm McKinsey & Co.

In 2011, Clare spent nine months living with her partner in North East Arnhem Land fostering a child and assisting local women to establish small businesses. In interviews she has previously cited Indigenous issues, child welfare, women’s issues and economics as key interests.

In May 2022, Clare O’Neil was appointed Minister for Home Affairs and Cyber Security. Clare is proud to serve as a Cabinet Minister of the 47th Parliament to support Australia to face the challenges we as a country face by fixing migration system, working towards Australia being the most cyber secure country by 2030 and further protecting the national security and resilience of Australians domestically.
