Meet the Minister with the Hon. Chris Bowen MP

Shadow Treasurer of Australia

Just a few months out from the Federal Election, join AmCham at an Exclusive luncheon with The Hon. Chris Bowen MP, Shadow Treasurer of Australia. Mr Bowen will discuss Labor’s financial and business policies in the lead-up to the Election.

Mr Bowen was first elected to the Australian Parliament as the Member for Prospect in Western Sydney in 2004. He was re-elected in 2007 before the seat was abolished in 2009, as a result of an electoral redistribution. Mr Bowen was subsequently elected as the Member for McMahon in 2010 and 2013.

Mr Bowen was first appointed to Labor’s frontbench in December 2006 as Shadow Assistant Treasurer and Shadow Minister for Revenue and Competition Policy. Following Labor’s return to government in 2007, he was appointed Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Competition Policy and Consumer Affairs. In June 2009, Chris was elevated to cabinet as Minister for Human Services and Minister for Financial Services, Superannuation and Corporate Law.

Following Labor’s re-election in 2010, Chris was appointed as Minister for Immigration and Citizenship. In 2013, Chris was appointed as Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills, Science and Research, and Minister for Small Business before being appointed Treasurer in June of the same year. After the 2013 election, he served as Interim Labor Party Leader and Leader of the Opposition during the Labor leadership ballot. He was later appointed Shadow Treasurer, the position which he currently occupies.

Prior to entering politics, Chris served as a Councillor and Mayor on Fairfield City Council and was the President of the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils from 2000 to 2002. Immediately prior to his election to Parliament, Chris was Chief of Staff to Carl Scully, former NSW Minister for Roads, Housing and Leader of the House.
