Innovation in Western Australia

West Australian’s have always been innovative. It is through innovation that a successful agricultural industry continues to thrive in WA despite our State having some of the poorest soils in the world and in the face of ongoing climate change. Further to this, the West Australian mining industry is at the cutting edge of technological innovation and is a world leader in areas such as remote operations and automation.

Western Australian business is in a great position to harness this innovative spirit to grow our competitive advantages in traditional areas of strength and in new industries such as cyber security and data analytics. The West Australian government is supporting innovation and job creation through the $16.7 million New Industries Fund.

AmCham's Meet the Minister Series provides senior business executives and officers of the Chamber the privilege and benefit of hearing a briefing by the Minister on important matters of state.

The Hon. David Kelly MLA is the Western Australian Minister for Water; Fisheries; Forestry; Innovation and ICT; Science. Minister Kelly will share his views on how Western Australia can harness its innovative spirit to grow its competitive advantage.

In March 2013, Minister Kelly was elected to the Thirty-Ninth parliament as the Member for Bassendean. Immediately following his election, Minister Kelly was also appointed the Shadow Minister for Water; Fisheries and Youth.

After the McGowan Labor Government secured an unprecedented 41 Legislative Assembly seats in the March 2017 election, he was appointed the Minister for Water, Fisheries; Forestry; Innovation and ICT; Science.

Prior to his entry into politics Minister Kelly spent 20 years in the union movement protecting the wages and conditions of some of the lowest-paid workers in WA; including education assistants, aged care workers, disability support workers and healthcare workers.

Minister Kelly played a key role in establishing the Bayswater-Noranda Community Bank, the first community bank to be established in metropolitan Perth. Minister Kelly was a board member of the bank from its establishment in 2000 to 2017.

As the first Minister for Innovation and ICT, he is excited by the possibilities this new portfolio will bring for people in Western Australia, including job creation and economic diversification.
