2019 marks the 160th anniversary of Queensland's emergence as a state in its own right, with its own identity.
Queensland has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a breakaway state that built its foundations on soil and hard toil. The state is shifting from a once in a lifetime resources construction boom towards a more diversified and knowledge-based economy. The strength of the economy now rivals some of the world’s biggest nations, but there are big challenges now and on the horizon that threaten the progress that has been made and the great state Queensland has become. The issue of what drives economic growth is central to the development of good economic policy and to our understanding where the economy is likely to head over the next decade. The world economic order is changing, bringing with it both challenges and opportunities for Queensland.
How can we lift productivity in a way that sustains economic growth, improves living standards and balances the natural environment?  About the Speakers
 Dr Matthew Peter | Chief Economist
QUEENSLAND INVESTMENT CORPORATION (QIC)
Matthew joined QIC in July 2008. As QIC's Chief Economist, he oversees global economic forecasting and research.
Matthew previously worked with fund manager TGM, where he headed the economic and financial-market forecasting team.
Prior to joining TGM, Matthew was Senior Research Fellow at Monash University. Here, he led the development of a regional model of the Australian economy. This model is widely used by Federal and State Government agencies and by most large consultancy firms.
Matthew and his team are among Australia’s top forecasters as ranked by Bloomberg. Matthew is a CEDA Trustee, an American Chamber of Commerce Governor and is frequent commentator at industry forums and in the press.
He has 20 years of economic modelling experience in both industry and academia, and holds a PhD in economics from Monash University.
 Erin Strang | Treasurer - Banking and Wealth
SUNCORP GROUP
After graduating, Erin joined the Reserve Bank of Australia in the Payments Policy Department, focusing on improving the payments system. After completing her Masters in Applied Finance, she took a secondment to the Bank of England, working initially in Payments and then Financial Stability looking at stability of the UK financial system.
Whilst still in London, Erin moved into investment banking to get closer to business outcomes, before returning to Australia to live in Brisbane in 2005. Wanting to deal more with people she tried out recruitment, then took a corporate advisory role at the Queensland Treasury Corporation and became a small business owner, before joining QR National prior to privatisation, where she became Group Treasurer.
Erin has been in her current role at Suncorp of Treasurer, Banking & Wealth for over 2 years.
 John Kettle | Partner
MCCULLOUGH ROBERTSON
John Kettle is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin and Oxford University and is admitted as a lawyer in Ireland, England and Australia. He heads up the international practice and is a leader of the renewables practice at the Queensland’s biggest independent corporate law firm, McCullough Robertson, having previously been a partner for 14 years at one of Ireland’s biggest law firms. John has worked extensively with US corporates, multinationals and private equity funds when in Ireland and since coming here to Australia. He is more than aware through this personal professional experience of the importance and reliability of US trade and innovation for the global economy and Australia.
 Councillor Krista Adams | Deputy Mayor
Chairman of the Finance and Economic Development Committee
BRISBANE CITY COUNCIL
Krista Adams was elected as Councillor for the ward of Wishart in 2008. In July 2010, she
was appointed Chair of Council to preside over the Council Chamber meetings and be
responsible for enforcing the standing orders to ensure orderly conduct in the Chamber.
After the 2012 Election, Krista was appointed Chair of Brisbane Lifestyle Committee where
she oversaw Festivals, Events and Community Services in Brisbane City Council.
Electoral boundary changes in 2016 mean Krista now represents the Holland Park Ward and
was also appointed as Chair of Finance and Economic Development. In her current Chair
role she oversees budget development with the Lord Mayor and is responsible for activities
that enhance the Economic Development of Brisbane City.
Krista was elected Deputy Mayor in April 2019, after the post was vacated by Lord Mayor
Adrian Schrinner.
