BlueScope is one of Australia’s unsung success stories in the USA. Careful planning and savvy decision making has grown the US business to be a vital market for the company, with over 4,500 staff and revenues of over $A7 billion.
Mark Vassella ran the US business for 3 years to 2011 before becoming CEO of BlueScope in 2018. Join us to hear from one of Australia’s true corporate leaders reflect on successful strategy and execution in the US market.

Mark Vassella was appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of BlueScope Steel in January 2018.

He joined the Company following BlueScope’s 2007 acquisition of Smorgon Steel Distribution where he was the Chief Executive.  He was appointed Chief Executive Australian Distribution and Solutions before moving to the US as President, BlueScope Steel North America in 2008.  He returned to Australia in 2011 to take up the role of Chief Executive BlueScope Australia and New Zealand.

Mr Vassella has a Bachelor of Commerce and a Masters of Business Administration.

Mr Vassella is on the Executive Board of Directors at World Steel Association (worldsteel) and holds the office of Treasurer.  He is a past Board member, President and Treasurer of the Family Life charitable organisation, and is a stalwart supporter of the St Kilda Football Club.
