About the Event

AmCham is delighted to announce that Zoe Daniel, MP, Independent Member for Goldstein, will be joining AmCham for lunch, on Tuesday, 12th July at 11:45am - 2:00pm, in the Bourke Room, RACV City Club, 501 Bourke Street, Melbourne.

Australian politics has long been dominated by the Labor and Liberal parties, but there’s a new teal in town. Support for Independent “Teal” candidates, saw six liberal-held seats won by a teal wave in the recent 2022 election – and Zoe Daniel was one of those of candidates.

This former journalist ran a campaign highlighting the issues of climate change, integrity, and equality. Now, Daniel is among the record-breaking number of women to join the most diverse Parliament in our country’s history and when Australia’s 47th Parliament convenes in Canberra at the end of July, Zoe Daniel MP, will take her seat.

So, what’s the American angle behind Daniel’s run?

What are Daniel’s inspirations, aspirations, and agenda?

What does a supersized crossbench mean for Australian business, politics, and culture?

During her campaign, Zoe shared something that her 14-year-old son had said to her – “you have a chance to do something for us all Mum”.  Join AmCham for lunch on Tuesday, July 12th for the answers and to hear first-hand about the rise of the Independents and just how Daniel plans to do something for us all.

Speaker Biography

Zoe Daniel, Independent MP,  Member for Goldstein

In November 2021, Zoe Daniel was announced as the community-backed Independent candidate for Goldstein in the federal election.

On May 21 this year Ms Daniel made history, convincingly winning the once-safe Liberal seat. She’s also the first woman to hold Goldstein, named after Australian suffragist Vida Goldstein.

Zoe has spent almost 3 decades on the front line of news and current events, in Australia and internationally, living and working in some of the most challenging environments in the world.

Zoe is a 3-time foreign correspondent and former ABC News United States Bureau chief. She was based in Washington DC from late 2015 until the end of 2019 and was one of the few journalists who saw the rise of Donald Trump coming. While in the United States, she travelled to 44 states and territories from Alaska to Puerto Rico.

Zoe was the ABC’s South East Asia correspondent from 2009 to 2013 and provided on-the-ground coverage of stories ranging from major political events to natural disasters including civil unrest and political protests in Bangkok, the reform process in Myanmar and the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

Between 2005 and 2006, Zoe was the ABC’s Africa correspondent.

Zoe has reported on politics, conflict, famine, natural disasters, plane crashes, terror attacks, mass shootings, repression, economic collapse and poverty across the world in countries as diverse as the USA, Mexico, Venezuela, Sudan, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe, Burma, Vietnam and Vanuatu.

She has met and interviewed displaced people, refugees, soldiers, voters, businesspeople, women and children and families, prime ministers and presidents.

She is the author of Storyteller, which provides a personal insight into her life as a foreign correspondent while juggling a family, and Angel, a novel for young teens about Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

Zoe’s most recent book, Greetings from Trumpland, was released in March 2021.

Zoe currently lives in Melbourne with her husband, two teenage children and golden retriever Tully.
