Tourism: Australia and the US

Panel Discussion with Paul Scurrah, Virgin Australia; Phillipa Harrison, Tourism Australia; and Margy Osmond, Tourism & Transport Forum

Securing the International Tourism Dollar in a Global Market

With an extensive background in aviation, transport and logistics, new Virgin Australia CEO Paul Scurrah is well placed to comment on the tourism and travel sector.

With a direct contribution of more than $57 billion into the Australian GDP, travel and tourism is one of Australia's largest industries reaching across every industry sector from Agriculture to Defence.

A record number of international visitors - 9.3 million for the year, ending April 2019 - continue to make the journey to our shores, employing more than 900,000 people locally. Strong growth from education sector and business-related travel has helped boost the number of repeat visitors to Australia, which recorded an increase of 5% in the past year.

The future looks bright on the surface. Dig a little deeper though, and the first-time visitor statistics which are a good indicator of trends in travel, have dropped to their lowest levels since 2010.

With so much at stake, how do we ensure that we remain an attractive and competitive destination for the global tourism dollar?

AmCham will deliver an expert panel, including new Virgin Australia CEO, Paul Scurrah, Tourism Australia Acting Managing Director, Phillipa Harrison, and Tourism & Transport Forum CEO, Margy Osmond, to profile how Australia must remain an attractive destination for international tourism revenue into Australia, and how our economy benefits from it. The panel will be moderated by co-host of First Edition on Sky News, Laura Jayes.
