Speaker Biographies

Nelson Cunningham, President and Co-Founder, McLarty Associates
 

Nelson Cunningham first worked for Joe Biden over two decades ago, when he came to Washington to serve as Biden's General Counsel on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Over the past year, Nelson has been deeply involved in the Biden campaign, serving as an outside advisor on trade and foreign policy issues. He served on the Obama-Biden transition team in 2008 and has also advised every Democratic presidential campaign since 2004 on foreign policy and trade matters.?
 
Prior to co-founding McLarty Associates in 1998, Mr. Cunningham served in the White House as Special Advisor to President Clinton on Western Hemisphere affairs and as General Counsel at the White House Office of Administration. Nelson Cunningham holds a B.A. from Yale University and a J.D. from Stanford University.


Ambassador Rick Burt, Managing Partner and Eurasia Director,
McLarty Associates

  

Amb. Rick Burt was a political appointee in senior foreign policy roles in the Reagan and George HW Bush administrations.  He served as US Ambassador to Germany and Assistant Secretary of State for Europe under President Ronald Reagan, and under President George H.W. Bush was chief negotiator for the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START I) between the United States and the Soviet Union.  Later, Ambassador Burt was a top national security advisor to John McCain's 2000 and 2008 presidential campaigns. He was also a one-time advisor to Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign. 
 
Amb. Burt also worked for a decade with McKinsey, and early in his career was a New York Times reporter.  He holds a B.A. from Cornell University and an M.A. from the Fletcher School at Tufts University. 


John Mullen, Senior Advisor, Australia and New Zealand,
McLarty Associates

  

John Mullen advises clients on trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific and is the lead for matters involving Australia and New Zealand.  Mr. Mullen was inducted into the NZ Order of Merit as Officer (ONZM) in 2010 by Prime Minister John Key. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University, teaching a course in the School of Foreign Service on trade in the Asia-Pacific.

Previously, Mr. Mullen served at high levels of USAID, in positions such as Acting General Counsel and Assistant Administrator for Private Enterprise and was a Special Assistant to Secretary of State Eagleburger. Mr. Mullen holds a J.D. from Harvard, a M.Comp.L from the University of Chicago Law School, and a B.S. in economics from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

Sara James is an Emmy Award-winning broadcast journalist and author. James has covered significant news events in Australasia for NBC, CNN and PBS. James is a featured commentator on Australia’s ABC News Breakfast. Her “American in Oz” segment provides detailed analysis of the US political landscape.

Prior to moving to Australia in 2008, James was based in New York City for NBC News. Her reporting duties took her around the world, including Somalia, Sudan, Bosnia, Israel, China, Japan and the Khyber Pass.

James’ reporting has earned her numerous awards, including an Emmy for coverage of the massacre at Columbine High School in Colorado, and the Overseas Press Club of America Citation of Excellence for her report on Australia’s Stolen Generation.

James is Board Director of the American Australian Association Limited and Australian-American Fulbright Commission, the Vice President of KCNQ2 Cure Alliance, and a co-founder of Genetic Epilepsy Team Australia.

James is the author of An American in Oz, co-author of The Best of Friends and editor of An Extraordinary School.
