The strategic future of Adelaide and creating communities which thrive means reaping the benefits that new technologies provide. This event will look to future infrastructure. Increased connectedness and benefits for consumers to ensure all can thrive in a global digital economy.

As Australia’s most liveable city, adopting and adapting new technologies including autonomous systems, robotics, artificial intelligence, and remote sensors into current operations will help Adelaide match its enviable lifestyle with a stronger economy. Adelaide is already well on the way. Recognised as a Smart City with Ten Gigibit Adelaide, the revolutionary fibre optic network and critical infrastructure for smart city services like smart lighting, parking and bins, as well as assessing the performance of the city through data analytics.

The discussion will highlight the significant work already happening with Growth State and the City Deal, which is growing Adelaide’s innovation economy and bringing well-paying jobs for people.

Hear from Nick Reade, CE of Department for Premier and Cabinet on “Making a difference so South Australia thrives”. He will be joined by the Right Honourable Lord Major, Sandy Verschoor and South Australia’s Chief Scientist, Prof Caroline McMillen. AmCham will host a discussion on embracing the significant economic and social opportunities that digital technologies bring.

Speaker Biographies

Nick Reade, Chief Executive, Department of Premier & Cabinet

Nick leads the department who support the Premier and Cabinet to deliver on the government's vision for South Australia. He commenced as Chief Executive of the Department of the Premier and Cabinet in February 2021.

His focus is on collaboration across government, the community and the private sector, growing the economy, innovation, and making it easier for people to do business with government.

A proud and passionate South Australian, Nick has a breadth of experience in South Australia’s business community, having served as CEO of BankSA and State General Manager for South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory for Westpac.

His career in financial services spans 30 years, during which Nick has held responsibility for small business banking nationally and built a strong track record in digital transformation, driving growth and innovation.

Nick is an alumnus of the University of South Australia and INSEAD in Paris.

 

The Right Honourable Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor, City of Adelaide
 

Sandy is a first-generation Australian of Dutch, French, Portuguese and Ceylonese descent. Her parents gave her a deep-rooted understanding of business, an adventurous spirit, commercial acumen and a love of the arts. Sandy is married to Gregg Mitchell, a graphic designer and artist, and has two daughters, and a son.

Sandy was elected as an Area Councillor in the 2015 by-election and served as Deputy Lord Mayor from June 2017 to November 2018. She has had a career in both the public and private enterprise, not-for-profits, and Local and State government, including three years as General Manager City Culture and Community Services for the City of Adelaide.

Sandy has contributed to the success of Adelaide’s thriving arts and culture community for more than two decades, including having been CEO of the Adelaide Fringe and the Adelaide Festival, as well as producer of the Adelaide Festival of Ideas in 2018.

She has been on numerous boards including the Adelaide Convention Bureau, Premier’s Climate Change Council, Adelaide Film Festival, Capital City Committee, as well as a trustee of the Adelaide Festival Centre Trust and Chairs a disability housing solutions organisation Aliro Ltd.

As Lord Mayor, Sandy is keen to keep costs low for residents and businesses by reducing red tape, strengthening Adelaide’s global reputation for culture, climate change action, and entrepreneurialism, preserving Adelaide’s heritage, and enhancing the city’s precincts and main streets for the benefit of local small business owners and the community.

Prof Caroline McMillen, Chief Scientist South Australia
 

Professor Caroline McMillen is a distinguished medical and health researcher, who holds national and international roles in research, industry engagement, innovation strategy and policy development.

Professor McMillen was Vice Chancellor at the University of Newcastle for seven years. During her tenure, she was instrumental in the economic transition of Newcastle through significant engagement with industry and the establishment of innovation hubs to drive collaboration between industry, researchers, startups and investors.

Her insights and experience proved instrumental in the development of the EXCITE Strategy, South Australia’s 10-year plan to grow the economy through R&D and the advancement of future industries, and maintain our proud reputation as a centre of scientific excellence.

Professor McMillen previously has worked at the University of Adelaide as head of the Department of Physiology and the University of South Australia as Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice President: Research and Innovation.


Robert Le Busque, Regional Vice President, Asia Pacific, Verizon
 

Robert Le Busque is the Regional Vice President, Asia Pacific for Verizon Enterprise Solutions with overall responsibility for delivering the digital transformation journey of the company’s enterprise and government customers across the Asia Pacific region.

Robert started his career with Verizon in 2001 and has spent many years living and working throughout the Asia Pacific region. He has led specialist technology sales teams across the Asia Pacific region, most notably in the Unified Communications (UC&C) category. In addition, he has held various leadership roles within the Asia Pacific Strategy and Operations team, and as the enterprise sales leader in the Australian market.

Prior to his current role, Robert was the Regional Managing Director for the Australia, New Zealand and Indian Enterprise Group for Verizon. This appointment followed Robert’s role as the Director of Strategy and Operations for all International Enterprise divisions; incorporating the Asia Pacific, EMEA and LATAM regions.

Prior to joining Verizon Business, Robert held consulting and management roles in both Asia and Europe.

Robert is a sought after speaker on regional Cyber Security trends and the evolving threat landscape, along with the digital transformation agenda for enterprises and governments.

Robert holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the Queensland University of Technology where he majored in classical music performance, and Postgraduate qualifications from the University of Queensland and the University of New South Wales.

In 2019 Robert was appointed a Governor of the American Chamber of Commerce in Australia, and has been a member of the Queensland Sudoku team for the past 7 years.
            

Jamie Briggs, Managing Partner - Adelaide, PwC Australia 
 

As the former Federal Minister for Cities and the Built Environment and the Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Jamie is extensively connected amongst the senior executive and Cabinets of both state and federal governments. He is known for his deep political acumen and vast knowledge of the political environment through each department. Prior to entering Parliament he was a Senior Advisor to the then Prime Minister the Hon. John Howard from 2004-2007 advising on workplace relations reform.

Jamie was instrumental in developing PwC's approach to cities with the development of the 'CityPulse' concept. He has been working very closely with significant private sector clients to develop solutions to important problems by providing a deep understanding of government and its processes driven from extensive and unique experience in the government sector.

Jamie has completed his MBA at the University of Adelaide and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
