With Australia’s resource-rich lands, industry leadership and research strengths, our country is well placed to play a leading role in developing innovative solutions for how energy is stored and deployed into the future and WA will be at the centre of the national plan to refine, manufacture and supply materials and components for these batteries as the home of a new R&D consortium of approx 60 industry, academic and government partners tasked with supporting the nation’s response to these emerging new industries.
The team behind the Future Battery Industries Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) is working as a fast pace to establish this new organisation given industry calls for Australia to act quickly or risk losing the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to overseas competitors. It will deliver a six-year research plan to address the gaps in the nation’s capacity to capitalise on the opportunities and creates the tools and technologies necessary for every stage of the international battery value chain.
The American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) represents business; providing networking opportunities, valuable support for emerging industries, and helping to establish business networks and commercial partnerships. Through AmCham’s advocacy work, the chamber works to improve the efficiency and strength of the business sector to build a strong and prosperous economy.

 About the Speakers
Stedman Ellis is Chief Executive Officer for the Future Battery Industries CRC. Stedman is an experienced executive and non-executive director within the resources, research and non-profit sectors. He has wide experience in membership organisations, regulation and policy development, stakeholder engagement and advocacy. Prior to joining the CRC consortium, he was chief operating officer WA for oil and gas association APPEA. He previously worked as a deputy director general with the WA Department of Mines & Petroleum and in senior external affairs roles with BHP Billiton (including assignments to PNG and the US), Woodside Petroleum and the WA Chamber of Minerals & Energy. Stedman is a director of the Australian Gas Industry Trust and of cultural organisation FORM. He previously chaired the WA Energy Research Alliance industry advisory group, was a member of the Advisory Board of the Australian Centre for Energy & Process Training and a board member of the Minerals Research Institute of WA. He has a bachelor of arts from UWA.
FBICRC is an industry focused research partnership supporting efforts to secure Australia an expanded place in the rapidly transforming global battery value chain. With the increased uptake of renewables, battery technology is transforming the way energy is stored and deployed. Australia is well placed to play a leadership role in making the most of these changes. It has all the components necessary for modern battery technology, including lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, aluminium, vanadium, and rare earth metals and graphite. It has a world class resources sector and research institutions, specialist manufacturing capability, and a highly capable workforce. Funding under the Commonwealth CRC Program was announced on 10 April 2019 for establishment of the FBICRC. The CRC has funding commitments in cash of $53M comprising Australian Government $25 million and $28 million in from industry and State Governments (including $6 million from the WA Government). There is also $82 million in kind commitment from industry, universities and other state governments. The total value of the endeavor is $135M over the next 6 years. The CRC aims to expand existing industries and create new ones in Australia, delivering an estimated $2.5 billion benefit to the Australian economy over the next 15 years. A research program will be initiated during 2019. It will address industry identified gaps in the battery industries value chain to expand battery chemical production including precursor and cathode-active materials; develop opportunities for specialist battery manufacture and recycling; and inform how we best employ battery storage and management systems to balance grids and integrate more renewables.
