Meet the New Kids on the Parliamentary Block!

A World of accelerating change and disruption brings unprecedented challenges for policy-makers. How will we manage the future? Hear today's rising political leaders describe how they will shape tomorrow's Australia.

Come meet some of the new faces of the 40th Parliament who are under 40 years of age. This event will provide an inside look to what becoming an MP is all about.

Panelists:

The Hon. Jessica Shaw MLA, Chair, Economics and Industry Standing Committee; Member for Swan Hills

Jessica Shaw is Member for Swan Hills in the WA Legislative Assembly, Chair of the Parliament’s Economics and Industry Standing Committee and has lived in the Perth Hills for over 11 years. Prior to entering parliament, Jessica  was a senior commercial executive, responsible for developing and managing a range of regulated and unregulated energy infrastructure projects. She has extensive corporate and public sector experience and four degrees, including a Masters in Law from the University of Cambridge.

Jessica’s areas of focus are: establishing a youth centre in Ellenbrook and extending mental health and youth suicide prevention services, supporting our seniors, delivering the train to Ellenbrook and improving transport infrastructure, enhancing policing and community safety, ensuring jobs for WA workers, supporting and improving bush fire prevention and management, assisting Bullsbrook residents with planning issues related to quarrying and landfill and moving towards a sustainable energy future.

The Hon. Jessica Stojkovski MLA, Committee Member, Joint Standing Committee on the Commissioner for Children and Young People; Member for Kingsley

Prior to entering Parliament Jessica was a strategic project town planner at the City of Wanneroo.

Jessica has always been committed to her community and served as the President of the Landsdale Residents Association where she campaigned successfully for a number of community projects, including grants to hold community ‘Get to know your neighbour’ days.

Jessica is no stranger to political life - her father Tony O’Gorman served as the Labor Member for Joondalup from 2001 – 2013.

The Hon. Zak Kirkup MLA, Shadow Parliamentary Secretary to the Leader of the Opposition; Members for Dawesville

From October 2006 through to September 2009, The Hon. Zak Kirkup worked for the Liberal Party of Western Australia. While there, he worked on a number of state and federal elections, initially starting as a campaign officer and ending up as the youngest ever Deputy State Director (Campaign Support) of the Liberal Party of WA.

After the Liberal Party won state government, Zak worked as a Principal Policy Advisor for the then Premier Colin Barnett through to 2014. He was responsible for a variety of policy areas and parliamentary duties including environment, corrective services, agriculture, planning, housing, heritage, emergency services, Parliament and Aboriginal affairs.

After working for more than ten years in politics, Zak moved into the private sector, working for Australia’s largest privately-owned builder. Over the past two years he has been responsible for developing and implementing business improvement strategies and improving relations with customers, suppliers, industry groups and community representatives. This role has afforded Zak the opportunity to be involved in both high-level strategising and on-the-ground, site-based work. When coupled with his extensive policy experience, Zak’s time in the private sector and his personal background leave him well placed to serve the people of Dawesville as their local Member of Parliament.

The Hon. David Michael MLA, Government Whip, Member for Balcatta

David studied Economics at UWA and while at University he joined both the Australian Labor Party and the Australian Republican Movement.

At 25 years old, David was voted in as the youngest Councillor the City of Stirling has ever had. He held that role for 12 years before being elected to State Parliament as the Member for Balcatta in March 2017.
On council, David improved community facilities, upgraded parks and roads, delivered new footpaths and introduced a modern recycling system, all while keeping the City of Stirling debt free.

On his entry to State Parliament David was immediately appointed Government Whip in the Legislative Assembly.

As the Member for Balcatta, David Michael is working hard to deliver real outcomes for local people. Upgrades to Balcatta Senior High School and Osborne Park Hospital are priorities for the McGowan Government as is the job creating Stephenson Avenue Extension.
