Dr Christoph Rudiger
Senior Lecturer, Deputy Director in Research Training, Faculty of Engineering
Monash University

(also the Academic Director of the AgTech LaunchPad, a joint initiative of Monash University & Bosch)

Dr Christoph Rüdiger holds a B.E. degree in civil engineering from Germany and a PhD degree in environmental engineering from the University of Melbourne. His theses focused on groundwater and contaminant flow around submerged building structures, and later the potential to assimilate streamflow data into land surface models for regional soil moisture prediction.

Dr Rüdiger joined the Centre National de Recherches Météorologiques at Météo France (Toulouse, France) in 2006, focusing on the performance analysis and data assimilation of surface soil moisture and vegetation information within the Météo France 's land surface model. This was followed by a post-doctoral position financed by the French Space Agency (CNES) on the validation of different passive and active microwave satellite products over France, with a particular focus on European Space Agency’s SMOS mission. He returned to Australia in 2008, on a position to coordinate and lead a number of cal/val campaigns for the Australian land validation segment of the SMOS mission in the Australian arid zone and the Murrumbidgee River catchment. Since 2011, Dr Rüdiger has been a faculty member at the Department of Civil Engineering at Monash University and has participated in the Australian cal/val segments of satellites launched by the America, Japanese, and European space agencies.

As an Academic Director of the AgTech LaunchPad, a Monash - Bosch initiative to develop the next generation of agricultural technologies and ensure global food security, his current research interests include the satellite-based remote sensing of vegetation dynamics and landscape water content at high resolution for drought monitoring and monitoring of agricultural activities, as well as wildfire predictions and recovery.
