ABOUT THE EVENT 

David was formerly the Chief Executive of the Department for Trade and Investment (DTI). In that role he drove business investment in the state and facilitated trade in goods and services interstate and internationally. David also developed strategy to ensure the management of the State’s Planning System to support our growing population to maintain our lifestyle. David has a demonstrated record of success in policy advice, financial management, and developing strong relationships across government, industry and community sector organisations. David was previously the Chief Executive of the Department of Treasury and Finance which included managing the state economy and budget through the global pandemic while continuing to invest in infrastructure and managing the state’s credit rating. David completed a Bachelor of Economics (Hons) from the University of Adelaide and in 2022 was awarded a Public Sector Medal for his outstanding contributions to economic and financial policy in South Australia. He is also a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a National Fellow of the Institute of Public Administration Australia. David is a passionate South Australian driven by helping to grow the South Australian economy through leading and collaborating both within government and with the private sector. He now holds the role of Chief Executive in the newly formed Department for Housing and Urban Development.

James Scotland - General Manager,  Supply Chain Resilience, Australian Industry Group  
 
James extensive career as a senior manager in widely different industries followed by several years as a business consultant, strategist, corporate trainer and small business owner, James is an experienced professional committed to assisting Australian businesses to connect, improve, grow, and succeed.  His engaging conference and webinars presentations are based on his ability to draw on his personal management experience combined with his practical understanding and application of the ‘theory’ of current and emerging business. He hosts the popular fortnightly podcast ‘Supply Circles’ and co-hosts the monthly niche podcast DBrief.  James has held senior roles in business development, strategic marketing and operations, and has worked extensively throughout metropolitan, regional and remote Australia. He is known for his highly developed interpersonal, communication, analytical and facilitation skills. For the last decade, James has been focused on assisting Australian SMEs to access local and global supply chains, and on understanding the issues of the constantly changing environment.  James has a Master of International Management, a Graduate Certificate in Human Resources and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. He is a graduate of Australian Institute of Company Directors, a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management, and a member of the Australian Marketing Institute. 
 
Marli Smith - Head of Procurement,  ASC
 
Marli has extensive experience in procurement and currently heads procurement at ASC Pty Ltd which is Australia’s largest locally owned defence prime contractor based in South Australia and Western Australia. Marli is an active participant in a number of diversity and inclusion matters. She has also worked in procurement for Santos, OneSteel and other mining and resources companies.

 

Professor Noel Lindsay - Dean of Business, Adelaide Business School 

Noel Lindsay is the Dean of Business, Adelaide Business School and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Entrepreneurship) at The University of Adelaide, where he is the Professor of Entrepreneurship and Commercialisation. Prior to Noel’s current roles, he held positions as: Director, Entrepreneurship, Commercialisation and Innovation Centre, Academic Director Singapore Operations – involving a posting to the University’s Nee Ann-Adelaide Singapore Campus, Acting Associate Dean Diversity and Inclusion, and Director, Australian Centre for Family Business (Bond University). Noel’s entrepreneurial experience includes having established, operated, and harvested ventures in Australia, South Africa, and Malaysia. He also has hands-on venture capital investment experience with one of Australia’s oldest venture capital firms.  As a Chartered Accountant, a CPA, and a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, Noel has practiced in the areas of audit, corporate insolvency, and family business advisory.  Through these various positions, Noel has gained experience in starting and growing entrepreneurial enterprises, strategy development and execution, commercialising innovations, building and leading cohesive teams, quality assurance, managing risk, entrepreneurial financing, corporate governance, organisational renewal, and change management. From a community perspective, Noel has a particular interest in how entrepreneurial thinking can assist in creating value and impact in communities – particularly helping those that are disadvantaged or challenged . From a knowledge transfer perspective, he is interested in enhancing the learning experience of nascent and existing entrepreneurs through experiential learning (including facilitating entrepreneurial internships using business incubators), and using online and blended learning formats, including MOOCs/SPOCs (having been involved in producing three MOOCs appearing on the edX platform), to facilitate pathways for those who are geographically distant.
