Thomas Thurston, Managing Director, WR Hambrecht Ventures:

Thomas is the Managing Director of Silicon Valley based venture capital firm, WR Hambrecht Ventures. He is also a data scientist. He developed the computing system, MESE™, to better predict the survival of start-ups and corporate growth initiatives; new product launches, acquisitions and venture capital. MESE™ is used exclusively by WR Hambrecht Ventures, one of the top tier performing venture capital firms in the U.S., to pick its early-stage start-up venture capital investments. It is also used by several Fortune500 companies globally via Growth Science, the organisation that owns and manages MESE™.

Thomas and his family moved to Brisbane in 2016 from Portland, Oregon, to investigate opportunities to establish a venture capital fund in the Australasian region. Thomas is looking forward to sharing his experience and expertise to help Queensland achieve its vision of being the Startup State of Australia.

Michael Masterson, Deputy Global CEO, EverEdge Global:

Michael is an expert in high growth businesses and intangible assets. As the eighth hire and part of the senior management team at a start-up, Michael was fundamental in the company’s growth to over 7,500 people in just over eight years, throughout Australasia. As the CEO of Asia and New Zealand (and one of the regions youngest major CEO’s) Michael guided the business to become one of New York stock exchange listed Omnicom Group’s (NYSE:OMC) most successful and profitable acquisitions. Since then he has founded a number of successful start-ups and turned around two mid-sized companies in logistics and FMCG, taking both from significant losses to profit within nine months. He is also on the board of Cure Brain Cancer, named the most Innovative Charity, and 25th most innovative organisation.

As Michael’s ability to critically evaluate innovations and opportunities from a commercial perspective is key to his contribution to the EverEdge team, and its growth from New Zealand to the US, UK and Australia, and recently Asia, to become the largest Intangible Asset Strategy company globally. EverEdge is on the Valuations Panel of Singapore for the Intellectual Property financing scheme and has formed a strategic alliance with the Singaporean government’s Intellectual Property Office.

Dr Elliot Smith, Co-Founder & Chief Technology Officer, Maxwell MRI:

Elliot is one of Queensland's most talented and entrepreneurial young programmers. Together with Matthew Brown, Elliot co-founded Maxwell MRI, a startup company that uses artificial intelligence to process medical images to help make the diagnosis for prostate cancer 'better and faster'. With Maxwell MRI recently making the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia 2017: Healthcare & Science, Elliot and his team have the potential to be Australia's next batch of globally successful tech entrepreneurs.

Dr Sarel Gronum, Business Management Program Leader & Lecturer in Innovation Leadership and Entrepreneurship, University of Queensland:

Sarel is a passionate lecturer, consultant and researcher with more than 20 years of international experience. He has published on innovation, network practices and business model design and has presented at several conferences nationally.

Dr Gronum actively reviews for a number of top journals and has worked on large-scale, industry sponsored research projects. His current research is in the area of SME growth and performance, specifically investigating the impacts of innovation and business model innovation. Sarel teaches and advises corporate and public sector organisations on innovation and entrepreneurship topics both in Australia and abroad.

Previously as CEO of a consulting firm, Sarel advised client companies from a wide range of industry sectors and assisted senior management with development and implementation of sustainable growth strategies.
