Dr Larry Marshall Appointed Chair of the Board

14 December 2022

The American Chamber of Commerce in Australia (AmCham) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Larry Marshall as Chair of the Board of Directors.

Dr Marshall is an entrepreneur, business leader and scientist who has founded companies and fostered innovation in Silicon Valley and Australia.  A dual citizen of Australia and the United States, Dr Marshall is the longest-serving Chief Executive of Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, in half a century where he will complete his third and final term in June 2023.

Dr Marshall’s transformational tenure at CSIRO included the identification of six National Challenges, the creation of its first Health group, making CSIRO home to Australia’s largest data science group, and the launch of the incubator program ON to fast-track research-driven start-up companies.

Dr Marshall’s dedication to Australian innovation is long-standing . In 2007 Dr Marshall was Managing Director of Southern Cross Ventures, an investment fund specialising in Australian innovation, where he delivered the first Nasdaq IPO of an Australian-venture backed start-up commercialising science.

“Dr Marshall’s passion for innovation, deep understanding of business and commitment to fostering new technologies make him a perfect fit for today’s AmCham,” said AmCham CEO April Palmerlee. ”To have a chair with his presence, intelligence, respect, networks, strong work ethic and deep links into both Australia and the US is a great benefit not only to the Chamber’s members but to the two countries more broadly.”

“I am honoured and excited to join the board of AmCham,” Dr Marshall said. “There has never been a more important time to focus on innovation and the growth and ambition it can deliver for individuals, organisations and the nation. I look forward to working with the Board and AmCham’s members.”

Dr Marshall, who is appointed in a private capacity, replaces outgoing AmCham Chair the Hon Dr Brendan Nelson AO.  Dr Nelson, whose distinguished career in politics and medicine included serving as Minister for Defence; Minister for Science, Education and Training; Ambassador to the EU, NATO, Belgium and Luxembourg; Director of the Australian War Memorial; and National President of the Australian Medical Association has served as AmCham Chair since March 2020. At the end of the year, he will move to London to take over as president of Boeing International.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Australia was founded in 1961 and has offices and programs across the country. The Chamber promotes two-way trade and investment between Australia and the United States through: access, advocacy, networking, visibility and information.
